Intel expected to ship 30 million chips for tablets in 2014

Shipping of Intel's tablet processor is expected to reach only 30 million units, which will account for about 10% of total tablet processor shipments and lower than the company's forecasted 40 million units. Demand for Windows 8.1 tablets powered by Bay Trail-T parts is not as high as it could have been.

Intel's new first Android products based on Bay Trail-T are expected by the end of the year, or in January 2014 according to a technology website, Digitimes.

Currently, the use of Intel-based Android devices are only limited to Intel's Fonepad series. Most vendors of Android devices are still adopting ARM-based solutions from Qualcomm, MediaTek, Rockchip, Allwinner Technology or Nvidia for their devices.

China's white-box player vendors are expected to become Intel's major customer for its Intel Bay Trail-T processor. These Android devices are expected to be to be available as early as February 2014. So far, Intel does not appear to have any orders from first-tier Android vendors.

Intel estimates shipments for its processors to reach 10 million units in 2013.

Among the 30 million Intel processors shipments in 2014, about 3 million units are expected to come from Intel's educational tablet manufactured by BYD or Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS).

Intel chip based white-box tablets will eventually reach Malaysia starting next year. As long as pricing is concerned, many would speculate that white box tablets are far cheaper than branded ones even with Intel's chip on them. Definitely, this is exciting news for tablet fans in Malaysia and abroad.
